Lloyds Metals was built from a steel plant that nobody else wanted to buy.

Mukesh Gupta's entry into steel came not through greenfield construction but through the acquisition of a non-operational plant in Maharashtra that other buyers had passed over. The turnaround required clearing legacy liabilities, rebuilding workforce capability and reinvesting in equipment, the unglamorous work that follows any distressed asset acquisition before the business can actually run.

The strategic choice that followed was to focus the plant on Direct Reduced Iron production rather than competing in the full range of steel products, a narrower market with higher margins and less direct competition from the large integrated steelmakers. The subsequent securing of captive iron ore mining rights reduced the principal input cost and gave the business a structural advantage that pure DRI producers without captive ore supply cannot match. Lloyds Metals has become a significant business on the back of that combination: a distressed asset acquired cheaply, operated in a focused niche and protected by vertical integration into raw material supply.
