Asian Paints was co-founded in 1942 by four friends, including Suryakant Dani, whose family's stake is represented today by Ina Ashwin Dani and her generation. The company's rise to market leadership in Indian paints was not primarily a function of branding. Asian Paints was among the first Indian manufacturers to use computer-aided supply chain management, which allowed it to serve a fragmented retail market of hundreds of thousands of dealers with a product range running into thousands of stock-keeping units at a speed and reliability that competitors could not match.

The company now operates in 15 countries with 27 manufacturing facilities. The Dani family's role as part of the founding promoter group has been that of long-term stewardship: ensuring the company remains professionally managed, that governance standards are maintained, and that the founding philosophy of operational excellence continues to define how the business is run.
