Havells moved from switchgears to fans to appliances by turning an industrial components company into a consumer brand.
Havells India was built by Qimat Rai Gupta as an electrical components business serving the construction and industrial markets. His son Anil Rai Gupta has extended the company into consumer electricals, adding fans, water heaters, air coolers and domestic appliances to a portfolio that had previously been invisible to the end consumer. The extension was not accidental: it used the existing manufacturing and distribution infrastructure to move into categories with higher brand premiums and more direct consumer relationships.
The most discussed decision in the company's history was the 2007 acquisition of Sylvania, a European lighting brand, for around $300 million, a large sum for a company of Havells' size at the time. The acquisition was divested in 2016 after the LED transition disrupted the traditional lighting market globally. The Sylvania episode is instructive not as a failure but as evidence that the family was willing to take risks at a size that tested the balance sheet, and willing to exit when the original strategic logic no longer held.
