TVS Motor won the Deming Prize before most Indian manufacturers had heard of it. The company it built reflects that.
Venu Srinivasan took over TVS Motor Company in 1979 at a critical moment for Indian manufacturing, when quality standards were low and foreign competition was imminent. His response was to invest in quality management systems before most Indian manufacturers had seriously considered them. TVS became the first Indian company to win the Deming Prize, the most rigorous quality award in manufacturing, in 2002. That commitment to process discipline shaped the company's culture and its products over subsequent decades.
TVS Motor is now one of India's largest two-wheeler manufacturers, exporting to over 80 countries and holding a significant position in the domestic electric two-wheeler segment under Sudarshan Venu's leadership. The acquisition of Norton Motorcycles in the UK extended the group's ambition into the premium global segment, adding a brand with a century of heritage to complement TVS's position in volume markets. Running a mass-market manufacturer and a hand-built premium brand simultaneously requires keeping the two operations genuinely separate, which the family has so far managed with care.
