Dabur was founded in 1884 by S.K. Burman, a physician who prepared and dispensed Ayurvedic medicines from his home in Kolkata. Five generations of the family have since managed the transition from an apothecary operation to one of India's largest consumer goods companies, a journey that required converting formulations developed for medicinal use into packaged products that could be sold at scale through modern retail and rural distribution networks.

The V.C. Burman family's stewardship has maintained the brand's association with natural and Ayurvedic ingredients while adapting the product portfolio for a consumer market that wants familiar formats rather than traditional dispensing forms.
