Mankind Pharma found its market in the towns and villages that larger pharmaceutical companies were not reaching.

Brothers Ramesh and Rajeev Juneja founded Mankind Pharma in 1995 with a distribution strategy that most pharmaceutical companies at the time were not pursuing: they focused on Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns and rural markets rather than the metro-dominated networks that larger companies had already built. The decision required a different kind of sales infrastructure, with more feet on the ground, lower average transaction sizes, and longer relationship cycles with smaller clinics. But it also meant competing in markets where the incumbents were weaker and the unmet need for affordable medicines was greater.

Mankind is now among the largest pharmaceutical companies in India by domestic sales volume, with a portfolio built around affordable branded generics in high-frequency therapy areas. The company listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2023. What the Juneja family built is less a story of scientific innovation than of distribution discipline and market insight: recognising that the largest underserved pharmaceutical market in the world was not in a distant export geography, but in the towns and villages of India itself.
