Polycab India, which Inder T. Jaisinghani built into the country's largest wires and cables manufacturer, operates in a sector that receives little public attention but underpins nearly every construction and infrastructure project in the country. Wires and cables are specified by engineers, procured by contractors and installed inside walls and conduits, invisible once the building is complete but essential to everything that happens inside it. Polycab commands the largest share of this market in India, with over 25 manufacturing facilities and a distribution network that reaches dealers in markets that most branded manufacturers do not systematically serve.

The company listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2019. It has since expanded into fast-moving electrical goods including fans, lighting and switches, using its distribution infrastructure as the entry point into categories where brand recognition and retail presence are the primary competitive variables. The wires business generates the cash flow and the distribution reach. The FMEG business is the attempt to convert both into a consumer brand.
