Gautam Adani and Family

Adani's consistent logic has been to own the infrastructure that other industries depend on, rather than those industries themselves.

Starting with a trading firm in 1988, Gautam Adani expanded into ports, then power generation, then airports, assembling what is now the country's largest private port operator. The group's 13 terminals handle roughly a quarter of India's total cargo, anchored by Mundra, the country's largest commercial port. The airport business, added later, now manages a significant share of national passenger traffic.

The group is currently in an expensive phase of expansion: $70 billion committed to renewable energy over this decade (as announced by the group, 2022), plus a data centre programme. Sons Karan and Jeet Adani are increasingly in operational leadership, Karan overseeing ports and logistics, Jeet aviation and digital infrastructure. The physical assets assembled over three decades now serve as the base from which the next generation is building further, extending the group's reach from physical logistics into the digital economy.
