Sun Pharma was built on the segments other generics companies avoided.

Dilip Shanghvi started Sun Pharmaceuticals in 1983 with five products and a two-person sales team. His early focus was on psychiatry and cardiology, both chronic-therapy segments that other generics manufacturers had largely avoided because the patient volumes were smaller and the regulatory requirements more exacting. That positioning proved durable. As Sun grew, it maintained a bias toward specialty and niche segments rather than competing in the highest-volume, lowest-margin end of the generics market.

The acquisition of Ranbaxy in 2014 was the most consequential decision in the company's history. Ranbaxy was larger than Sun at the time and was carrying severe regulatory problems with the US Food and Drug Administration. Shanghvi acquired it, resolved the compliance issues over several years, and absorbed its manufacturing footprint and international distribution. Sun Pharma today operates in over 100 countries and is India's largest pharmaceutical company by revenue (Company filings, FY25). The family's wealth is tied almost entirely to that single enterprise, built across four decades of consistent management.
