Modi Enterprises is building businesses beyond tobacco using the cash flows that tobacco generates. The logic is straightforward; the execution is not.
Modi Enterprises traces its origins to Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi, who built an industrial group in the pre-Independence era spanning textiles, chemicals and consumer goods. The business passed through K.K. Modi and now through Bina Modi, who leads the group's flagship companies including Godfrey Phillips India, the country's second-largest cigarette manufacturer, and Indofil Industries, a significant player in agrochemicals. Running a tobacco business in an era of rising regulation and declining social acceptance requires managing a shrinking core while generating cash flows to fund diversification.
The Modi family's expansion into direct selling, cosmetics, education and hospitality reflects an attempt to build a post-tobacco revenue base from the resources the core business generates. The next generation, including Samir, Lalit and Charu Modi, are each engaged with different parts of the group's portfolio. The diversification logic is more strategic compulsion than opportunism, and how successfully the family builds businesses outside tobacco over the next decade will determine the group's long-term shape.
