Alkem Laboratories built its domestic pharmaceutical business in the towns and districts that metro-focused companies had not yet reached.

Basudeo N. Singh co-founded Alkem Laboratories and has seen it grow from a regional pharmaceutical distributor into a domestic and international generics manufacturer. The company's early business was built on branded generics distributed through a medical representative force that covered towns and districts that larger pharma companies were not systematically reaching, a distribution-first strategy that produced strong market positions in India's domestic ethical pharmaceuticals market.

The next generation, Sandeep Singh as Managing Director and Mritunjay Kumar Singh as Executive Director, has pushed the business toward regulated export markets, R&D investment and complex formulations, extending the company's ambition beyond the domestic generics model on which it was founded. Alkem went public in 2015 and has performed consistently as a listed company. The Alkem Foundation's work in anaemia prevention, cancer care and rural livelihoods reflects a CSR programme with specific health outcomes rather than the generic community investment that many companies report, a distinction that matters when the company's core business is healthcare.
